Lucknow Hospital Performs Successful Liver Transplant with Inter-Institutional Organ Support
King George’s Medical University (KGMU) successfully conducted a liver transplant surgery on a 35-year-old patient suffering from liver cirrhosis. The transplant was made possible by a liver donation from the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), which had harvested the organ from a brain-dead donor.
The donor, Sandeep Kumar (43), tragically passed away in a road accident. Following his passing, his family consented to donate his organs. At the time of the donation, there were no matching liver recipients at SGPGI, so the harvested liver was transferred to KGMU. The transplant was performed on 35-year-old Ravindra Pratap Singh, who was deemed a suitable match.
The surgical gastroenterology department at KGMU performed the transplant surgery, which commenced on Sunday evening and was completed by Monday morning. Doctors have confirmed that the patient has been successfully removed from the ventilator, and his vital signs are now stable.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Soniya Nityanand closely monitored the entire procedure and commended the decision of the donor’s family, describing it as an inspiring act of generosity.
